لا تَصْحَبِ المائِقَ فَيُزَيِّنَ لَكَ فِعْلَهُ، ويَوَدَّ أنّكَ مِثْلُهُ۔

Do not associate with a fool, for he will embellish his actions for you and want you to become like him.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against associating with fools. The word used for fool in this Hadith is (مائقَ) "ma'iqa", which refers to someone who lacks wisdom, understanding, and intelligence. This person may engage in foolish actions, make poor decisions, and have a negative influence on others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to befriend such individuals because they will try to deceive us by making their actions appear attractive and desirable. They will try to influence us to adopt their foolish behavior and mindset. This Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be cautious in choosing our companions and to surround ourselves with people who possess wisdom and understanding.

The Quran supports the wisdom behind Imam Ali's advice in this Hadith. In Surah Al-Furqan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the true servants of the Most Merciful. One of these characteristics is mentioned in verse 63:

(Quran 25:63)

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace and composure when faced with ignorance. By avoiding association with fools, we can protect ourselves from being influenced by their negative behavior and instead respond with wisdom and peace.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises the believers regarding their friendships and alliances. In verse 8, Allah says:

(Quran 60:8)

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of maintaining good relations with those who are just and fair, regardless of their religious beliefs. However, it also implies the need to be cautious in choosing our companions and alliances, as associating with those who may lead us astray or have a negative influence on us is not advised.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is a reminder for us to be mindful of the company we keep. Our companions have a significant impact on our thoughts, actions, and character. If we surround ourselves with wise and knowledgeable individuals, we are more likely to acquire wisdom and make better decisions. Conversely, if we associate with fools, we may be influenced to adopt their foolish behavior and mindset.

By avoiding association with fools, we protect ourselves from the negative consequences that may arise from their influence. We safeguard our intellect, preserve our moral values, and maintain a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith serves as a reminder for us to choose our companions wisely and seek the company of those who will guide us towards righteousness and wisdom.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against associating with fools who may deceive us and lead us astray. By choosing our companions wisely and surrounding ourselves with those who possess wisdom and understanding, we protect ourselves from negative influences and ensure our growth and development as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in making righteous choices and grant us the wisdom to discern between good and evil.
