— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "خَيْرُ السِّياساتِ العَدْلُ۔" This can be translated as,

The best of policies is justice.

In this impactful saying , Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of justice in governance and leadership.

The word (siyasa) "سِّيَاسَة" in Arabic refers to the art of governance and administration. It encompasses the principles and strategies employed in managing the affairs of a state or community. The term (adl) "عَدْل" means justice, fairness, and equity. It signifies the act of treating individuals with equality and ensuring that their rights are upheld.

To understand the significance of justice in governance, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice. In Surah An-Nisa, verse 135, Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the obligation of Muslims to uphold justice, even if it means going against their own interests or the interests of their loved ones.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 8, Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being just and fair, even when dealing with those whom we may have disagreements or conflicts with.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the fundamental principle that justice is the cornerstone of any successful governance. When justice is upheld, it leads to a harmonious society where individuals are treated fairly and their rights are protected. It ensures that resources are distributed equitably, and no one is oppressed or marginalized.

Justice in governance has far-reaching consequences. It fosters trust and confidence among the people, as they feel secure in the knowledge that their rights will be respected and their grievances will be addressed. It promotes social cohesion and unity, as individuals from diverse backgrounds are treated equally under the law. It also serves as a deterrent to corruption and abuse of power, as those in positions of authority are held accountable for their actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and wisdom, recognized the pivotal role of justice in governance. His own leadership during his caliphate was characterized by his unwavering commitment to justice. He established a system where the rights of all individuals, regardless of their social status or religious affiliation, were protected. His famous saying,

People are of two types: they are either your brothers in faith or your equals in humanity,

exemplifies his belief in the inherent dignity and equality of all human beings.

As Muslims, we are called upon to reflect on the profound wisdom of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement and strive to implement justice in all aspects of our lives. Whether it be in our personal relationships, our interactions with others, or our involvement in public affairs, justice should be our guiding principle. By upholding justice, we contribute to the establishment of a just society, in line with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble family.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody justice in all our actions and decisions. May He guide us to follow the path of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive for justice in all aspects of our lives.
