مَنْ أسْدى مَعْرُوفاً إلى غَيْرِ أهْلِهِ ظَلَمَ مَعْرُوفَهُ۔
One who does good to the undeserving has wronged his goodness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أسْدَى مَعْرُوفًا إِلَى غَيْرِ أهْلِهِ ظَلَمَ مَعْرُوفَهُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who does good to the undeserving has wronged his goodness.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The key words in this Hadith are (ma'rufan) "مَعْرُوفًا" and (zalam) "ظَلَمَ". "مَعْرُوفًا" refers to acts of kindness, goodness, or benevolence, while "ظَلَمَ" means to wrong, oppress, or commit injustice.
To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 28:77)
And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters
This verse emphasizes the importance of doing good to others, just as Allah has bestowed His blessings upon us. It encourages us to spread kindness and avoid causing harm or corruption.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 4:135)
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice and fairness, even if it goes against our personal inclinations or relationships. It reminds us that Allah's commandments should always take precedence over our own desires.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. He highlights the concept of doing good to those who do not deserve it. This does not mean that we should withhold kindness from others, but rather, it serves as a reminder to be mindful of our intentions and the consequences of our actions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we extend acts of kindness to those who do not appreciate or deserve it, we may inadvertently be wronging our own goodness. By giving to those who are ungrateful or undeserving, we risk enabling their negative behavior or perpetuating injustice. It is important to discern between genuine acts of kindness and enabling harmful behavior.
For example, if someone consistently mistreats us or takes advantage of our generosity, it is important to set boundaries and prioritize justice. This does not mean that we should abandon kindness altogether, but rather, we should be mindful of the consequences of our actions and ensure that our acts of goodness are not enabling or perpetuating injustice.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be discerning in their acts of kindness. While it is important to spread goodness and kindness, we must also be mindful of the consequences and ensure that our actions do not enable or perpetuate injustice. By following the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to strike a balance between compassion and justice in our interactions with others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in all our actions and help us to be a source of goodness in the world.
