Hadith #1059

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

غَرَّ جَهُولاً كاذِبُ أمَلِهِ فَفاتَهُ حُسْنُ عَمَلِهِ۔

This Hadith highlights the consequences of ignorance and the deception of false hopes. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (gharra) "غَرَّ" refers to being deceived or misled, while (jahulan) "جَهُولاً" means ignorance or lack of knowledge. The phrase (kathibu amalihi) "كاذِبُ أمَلِهِ" translates to the deception of one's hope. This implies that an ignorant person is easily deceived by their own false hopes, leading them astray from the right path. Consequently, (fafatahu husnu amalihi) "فَفاتَهُ حُسْنُ عَمَلِهِ" means that they lose the best of their actions.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Yunus, verse 57:

O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from Allah, as it is a means of healing and mercy for the believers. Ignorance, on the other hand, leads to deception and loss.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the danger of accepting information without verification, as it can lead to harm caused by ignorance. It is essential to seek knowledge and verify the truth before making judgments or decisions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant against ignorance and the deception of false hopes. Ignorance can lead one to be easily misled and lose the reward of their good deeds. It is crucial to seek knowledge, understand the teachings of Islam, and not be swayed by baseless hopes or desires.

As a result, they lose the reward of their good intentions and actions.

This is why Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before acting upon it.
