ذِكْرُ اللّهِ نُورُ الإيمانِ۔
Remembrance of Allah is the light of faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ذِكْرُ اللّهِ نُورُ الإيمانِ۔
which translates to
Remembrance of Allah is the light of faith.
This beautiful saying emphasizes the significance of remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in strengthening and illuminating one's faith.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (dhikr) "ذِكْرُ" refers to the act of remembrance, specifically remembering Allah and His attributes. It encompasses various forms of worship, such as recitation of the Quran, supplication, and praising Allah. The word (Allah) "اللّهِ" refers to the one true God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. (nur) "نُورُ" means light, which symbolizes guidance, enlightenment, and spiritual illumination. Lastly, (al-iman) "الإيمانِ" refers to faith, which encompasses belief in Allah, His messengers, the Day of Judgment, and performing righteous deeds.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah An-Nur, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 24:35)
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things
This ayah beautifully illustrates the concept of light in relation to Allah. Just as Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth, the remembrance of Allah serves as a light for the believers. When we engage in the remembrance of Allah, our hearts are illuminated with faith, and we are guided towards righteousness and the path of truth. This light dispels the darkness of ignorance, doubt, and sin, allowing us to navigate through the challenges of life with clarity and conviction.
The remembrance of Allah is not limited to a specific act of worship; rather, it encompasses all aspects of our lives. It is a constant state of mindfulness and awareness of Allah's presence. When we remember Allah in our daily activities, whether it be through reciting His names, seeking His forgiveness, or expressing gratitude, our faith is strengthened, and our connection with Allah deepens.
The consequences of neglecting the remembrance of Allah are evident in the spiritual void and confusion that can engulf an individual. Without the light of faith, one may become susceptible to the temptations of this world, leading to a loss of purpose and direction. Conversely, when we actively engage in the remembrance of Allah, we experience a sense of tranquility, contentment, and spiritual fulfillment.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of continuously remembering Allah. His statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of all backgrounds, whether Shia or Sunni, that the remembrance of Allah is the key to nurturing and strengthening our faith. It is through this remembrance that we find solace, guidance, and the light that illuminates our path towards Allah's pleasure and eternal success.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember Him constantly and may our faith be illuminated with His divine light. May we strive to incorporate the remembrance of Allah into every aspect of our lives, seeking His guidance and mercy. Ameen.
