Hadith #10090

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Increased wealth corrupts the hearts and gives rise to sins.

This profound statement highlights the potential dangers and negative consequences of excessive wealth on the human heart and behavior.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (kasratu) "كَثْرَةُ" refers to the abundance or increase in wealth. Lastly, (tunshi'u) "تُنْشِئُ" denotes the rise or emergence of something, and (adh-dhunub) "الذُّنُوبَ" signifies sins.

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that worldly possessions, including wealth, can distract us from the true purpose of life and lead us astray. It highlights the transitory nature of material wealth and emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and approval from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80:

And say: 'My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.'

This verse teaches us to seek strength and stability from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives, including our relationship with wealth. It reminds us that true success lies in being firm and steadfast in our faith, regardless of our material possessions.

It can create a vicious cycle of accumulating more wealth, often at the expense of ethical considerations and the rights of others. This pursuit of material gain can lead to a disregard for moral values, causing harm to ourselves and those around us.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strike a balance in their pursuit of wealth. It encourages us to prioritize spiritual growth, humility, and the well-being of others over the accumulation of material possessions. By doing so, we can safeguard our hearts from corruption and ensure that our wealth is used in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial to society.
