(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Love of wealth is the cause of tribulations and love of leadership is the root of tribulations.

This wise utterance highlights two significant aspects of human nature that can lead to great difficulties and trials within society.

Firstly, let us delve into the meaning of the words used in this Hadith. The word (love) "حُبُّ" signifies an intense affection or attachment towards something or someone. (wealth) "المالِ" refers to material possessions, money, and worldly riches. (cause) "سَبَبُ" indicates the reason or origin of something. (tribulations) "الفِتَنِ" refers to trials, conflicts, and discord that arise within society. Similarly, the word (leadership) "الرِّياسَةِ" refers to the desire for power, authority, and control. (root) "رَأسُ" signifies the foundation or source of something. Lastly, (tribulations) "المِحَنِ" refers to hardships, challenges, and difficulties that individuals and communities face.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 14: (Quran 3:14)

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.

This verse emphasizes that the love of worldly possessions, including wealth and material goods, can distract individuals from their true purpose in life. When people become excessively attached to wealth, they prioritize their own desires and interests over the well-being of others. This love for wealth can lead to greed, selfishness, and a disregard for the rights of others. Consequently, it creates an environment of competition, envy, and injustice, which ultimately results in tribulations and conflicts within society.

Furthermore, the Quran also addresses the love of leadership and power. In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 76, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states: (Quran 28:76)

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, 'Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.'

This verse narrates the story of Qarun, who was blessed with immense wealth and power. However, he became arrogant and oppressive towards his people, using his leadership position to exploit and mistreat them. This love for leadership, when driven by ego and a desire for dominance, can lead to corruption, oppression, and the neglect of the rights of others. It creates a toxic environment where individuals are willing to compromise their principles and values for personal gain, causing tribulations and hardships for those under their authority.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the love for wealth and leadership. It highlights the importance of prioritizing the well-being of others and the greater good of society over personal desires and ambitions. When individuals become consumed by the love of wealth and leadership, they lose sight of their responsibilities towards their fellow Muslims and humanity as a whole.

The consequences of this love for wealth and leadership can be seen throughout history and in contemporary society. Economic disparities, exploitation, and social injustices are prevalent in societies where the love for wealth is unchecked. Similarly, the lust for power and leadership often leads to corruption, oppression, and the erosion of trust within communities.

As Muslims, we should reflect on this Hadith and strive to cultivate a balanced approach towards wealth and leadership. We should seek wealth through lawful means and utilize it for the betterment of society, rather than hoarding it for personal gain. Likewise, we should aspire to positions of leadership with the intention of serving and guiding others, rather than seeking power for its own sake.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the love for wealth and leadership. By prioritizing the well-being of others and striving for justice and fairness, we can contribute to a harmonious and prosperous society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in our pursuit of wealth and leadership, and protect us from the tribulations that arise from their misuse.
