Satisfaction [with the decree of Allah] is the fruit of certitude.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Pleased And Satisfied)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الرضا ثمرة اليقين" which translates to
Satisfaction [with the decree of Allah] is the fruit of certitude.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of having complete faith and trust in Allah's decree, which leads to a state of contentment and inner peace.
To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us first explore the key words used. (satisfaction) "الرضا" refers to a state of being pleased and content with what Allah has decreed for us. It is a state of acceptance and submission to the divine will. (fruit) "ثمرة" symbolizes the outcome or result of something. And (certitude) "اليقين" refers to unwavering faith and conviction in the truth of Allah's promises and His wisdom in all matters.
The Quran provides us with several verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:216),
But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.
This verse emphasizes the importance of trusting in Allah's wisdom, even when we may not understand the wisdom behind certain events or circumstances. It reminds us that what we perceive as unfavorable may actually be beneficial for us in the long run.
Another verse that supports the concept of satisfaction with Allah's decree is found in Surah At-Talaq (65:3),
And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
This verse reassures us that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer, and He will take care of our needs even from unexpected sources. It encourages us to place our trust in Him and rely on His decree, knowing that He has already ordained a set plan for everything.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the connection between certitude and satisfaction. When we have complete faith and conviction in Allah's wisdom and plan, we can find contentment and peace in any situation. This certitude stems from deep knowledge and understanding of Allah's attributes and His guidance through the Quran. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, which enabled him to fully comprehend the importance of satisfaction with Allah's decree.
When we embrace this mindset of satisfaction, it has profound effects on our lives. We become less attached to worldly desires and outcomes, and instead focus on pleasing Allah and seeking His pleasure. We are able to navigate through trials and tribulations with patience and resilience, knowing that everything happens for a reason and is part of Allah's divine plan. This mindset also fosters gratitude and contentment, as we recognize the blessings and favors bestowed upon us by Allah, even in challenging times.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of having certitude in Allah's decree and finding satisfaction in it. Through unwavering faith and trust in Allah's wisdom, we can attain a state of contentment and inner peace. This mindset enables us to navigate through the ups and downs of life with grace and gratitude, knowing that everything happens according to Allah's divine plan. May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate this certitude and find true satisfaction in His decree.
