Now surely the good repute of a man that is preserved for him by Allah among the people is better than the wealth that is inherited by those who do not praise him.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the immense value and significance of having a truthful tongue. He states that a truthful tongue, which speaks with honesty and integrity, is a blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that brings about a good reputation for an individual among people. This good reputation is far superior to the wealth that is inherited by those who do not praise him.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding of its meaning and significance. The word "lisan" refers to the tongue, which is the instrument of speech. The word "sadiq" means truthful or sincere. Hence, the Hadith emphasizes the importance of speaking truthfully and sincerely, as it has a profound impact on an individual's reputation and standing among people.

The Hadith further states that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself preserves this good reputation for the individual. This highlights the divine intervention and protection that is bestowed upon those who choose to speak the truth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) ensures that the truthfulness of their words is recognized and acknowledged by others, leading to a positive perception and a good reputation.

To understand the significance of a good reputation, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse refers to the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who was known for his honesty, integrity, and truthfulness. His impeccable character earned him the respect and admiration of people, and he became a role model for all Muslims.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (49:12)

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions, backbiting, and slander, which tarnish a person's reputation and harm relationships within the Muslim community.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that a good reputation, earned through truthfulness, is more valuable than inherited wealth. Inherited wealth may bring temporary material comfort, but it does not guarantee respect, honor, or a positive perception among people. On the other hand, a good reputation earned through truthfulness and sincerity brings about lasting benefits and blessings in this world and the Hereafter.

The consequences of having a truthful tongue are far-reaching. It not only enhances an individual's personal and social life but also strengthens the bonds of trust within the Muslim community. When Muslims consistently speak the truth, they create an environment of honesty and integrity, which fosters unity, cooperation, and mutual respect.

Moreover, a truthful tongue reflects the knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). He was renowned for his deep understanding of Islam and his ability to articulate profound truths. His words in this Hadith serve as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize truthfulness in their speech and actions, following in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the immense value and significance of having a truthful tongue. Speaking truthfully and sincerely not only earns a good reputation among people but also brings about blessings and divine protection from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Muslims are reminded to prioritize truthfulness in their speech and actions, as it is a fundamental aspect of their faith. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to speak the truth and earn a good reputation among people.
