مِنَ السَّعادَةِ التَّوفيقُ لِصالِحِ الأعْمالِ۔
It is part of felicity to be granted success in performing righteous deeds.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Felicity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنَ السَّعادَةِ التَّوفيقُ لِصالِحِ الأعْمالِ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of being granted success in performing righteous deeds as a part of true happiness and felicity. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (tawfiq) "تَوْفِيق" in this Hadith refers to divine guidance and assistance that enables an individual to perform righteous deeds and make correct choices. It is a blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that leads a person towards righteousness and success. The word (salih) "صَالِحِ" means good or righteous, and (al-a'mal) "الأعْمَالِ" refers to actions or deeds.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the concept of tawfiq and its significance in achieving success in performing righteous deeds. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:29),
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
This verse highlights that when a person fears Allah and strives to please Him, Allah grants them the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and guides them towards righteousness. This guidance leads to the removal of their misdeeds and the forgiveness of their sins. It is through this tawfiq that one can achieve success in performing righteous deeds.
Another verse that supports the concept of tawfiq is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
This verse reminds us that true guidance comes from Allah alone. It is not within the power of any human being, including the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), to guide someone towards righteousness. It is Allah who grants tawfiq to whom He wills, based on His infinite knowledge and wisdom. Therefore, seeking tawfiq from Allah is essential for the success of our righteous endeavors.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that true happiness and felicity lie in being granted tawfiq to perform righteous deeds. When we are blessed with tawfiq, our actions become sincere and pleasing to Allah. We are able to make choices that align with His commands and fulfill our obligations as Muslims.
The consequences of being granted tawfiq are profound. It leads to the purification of our souls, the strengthening of our faith, and the attainment of closeness to Allah. It enables us to fulfill our duties towards ourselves, our families, and society at large. Through righteous actions, we contribute to the betterment of our communities and strive for the establishment of justice and peace.
The motivation to seek tawfiq should arise from our love for Allah and our desire to please Him. We should constantly supplicate to Allah, seeking His guidance and assistance in performing righteous deeds. We should strive to increase our knowledge of Islam and the teachings of the Quran, as knowledge is a key factor in attaining tawfiq.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being granted tawfiq in performing righteous deeds as a part of true happiness and felicity. This tawfiq is a divine blessing that enables us to make choices that please Allah and fulfill our obligations as Muslims. By seeking tawfiq and striving for righteousness, we can attain success in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us all tawfiq and bless us with the ability to perform righteous deeds.
