لَمْ يَلْقَ أحَدٌ مِنْ سَرّاءِ الدُّنْيا بَطْناً إلاّ مَنَحَتْهُ مِنْ ضَرَّائِها ظَهْراً۔
Nobody gets the comforts of this world internally but that he has to face its hardships externally.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Nobody gets the comforts of this world internally but that he has to face its hardships externally.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the reality of life, where one cannot experience the pleasures and luxuries of this world without encountering the difficulties and challenges that come along with them.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (sarraa'i) "سَرَّاءِ" refers to the comforts, delights, and pleasures of this worldly life. It encompasses the material possessions, wealth, and worldly success that people strive for. On the other hand, the word (darraaiha) "ضَرَّائِهَا" refers to the hardships, difficulties, and trials that are inherent in the pursuit of worldly comforts.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155:
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse emphasizes that hardships and trials are an inevitable part of life. They serve as tests from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to assess our patience, faith, and gratitude.
In Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tested?
This verse reminds us that belief alone is not sufficient; rather, it is through the trials and tribulations that our faith is tested and strengthened.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the reality that the comforts and pleasures of this world are often accompanied by hardships and challenges. For instance, a person who attains wealth and success may face the burden of responsibilities, the fear of losing their wealth, or the envy and jealousy of others. Similarly, one who enjoys good health may still experience emotional distress or face other difficulties in life.
This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that the pursuit of worldly comforts should not be the sole focus of our lives. Rather, we should be prepared to face the challenges and hardships that come along with them. It teaches us the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective and not becoming attached to the fleeting pleasures of this world.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, which is evident in this Hadith. His deep understanding of the human condition and the nature of this world allows us to reflect on the transient nature of worldly comforts. It encourages us to prioritize our spiritual growth and focus on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that the comforts and pleasures of this world are not without their share of hardships and challenges. It urges us to maintain a balanced perspective, not becoming attached to worldly possessions, and to prioritize our spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate the trials of this world and the strength to seek His pleasure above all else.
