Hadith #2391

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رَأْسُ السَّخاءِ تَعْجيلُ العَطاءِ۔

This can be translated as,

The pinnacle of generosity is being expeditious in giving.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sakhā') "سَخَاء" in Arabic refers to generosity, magnanimity, and liberality. It encompasses the act of giving freely and abundantly, without any expectation of return. It is a noble quality that is highly praised in Islam. The word (ta'jīl) "تَعْجِيل" means to hasten or expedite. It implies the act of giving promptly and without delay.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages and praises those who are generous and quick in giving. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:261)

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing

This verse highlights the immense reward and blessings that come with being generous and giving in the cause of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah states, (Quran 2:245)

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned

This verse emphasizes the concept of giving as a loan to Allah, knowing that He will multiply it manifold. It encourages Muslims to be prompt and eager in giving, knowing that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the importance of not only being generous but also being quick in giving. It teaches us that true generosity lies in the willingness to give promptly and without hesitation. When we are swift in our acts of charity, we demonstrate a sincere desire to help others and alleviate their suffering.

Being expeditious in giving has numerous motivations and consequences. Firstly, it reflects a deep sense of empathy and compassion towards those in need. When we see someone in distress, our immediate response should be to offer assistance without delay. This not only provides immediate relief but also instills hope and comfort in the hearts of those who are suffering.

Secondly, being quick in giving prevents any procrastination or hesitation that may arise due to selfish desires or doubts. It helps us overcome any internal barriers that may hinder our generosity. By acting promptly, we remove the opportunity for our ego to intervene and prevent us from fulfilling our duty towards others.

Thirdly, being expeditious in giving sets an example for others to follow. When Muslims witness someone who is swift in their acts of charity, it inspires and motivates them to do the same. It creates a ripple effect of generosity and kindness within the community, fostering an environment of compassion and support.

Lastly, being prompt in giving allows us to reap the spiritual and worldly benefits associated with generosity. The Quran assures us that Allah will multiply our rewards and bless us abundantly when we give in His cause. By being expeditious in our acts of charity, we open ourselves up to receiving these blessings and experiencing the joy that comes from helping others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the pinnacle of generosity lies in being expeditious in giving. It urges us to be prompt and eager in our acts of charity, knowing that Allah will reward us abundantly. By embodying this quality, we not only fulfill our duty towards others but also cultivate a compassionate and generous spirit within ourselves. May Allah guide us all to be generous and quick in giving, and may He bless us with His infinite mercy and blessings.
