(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الفضلُ مَعَ الإحسانِ" which translates to

Merit is [acquired] with benevolence.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect or school of thought.

Let us first delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (al-fadl) "الفضلُ" refers to excellence, virtue, or merit. It signifies the possession of praiseworthy qualities or actions that elevate an individual's status in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). (ma'a) "مَعَ" means "with" or "alongside," indicating a close connection or correlation between two elements. And finally, (al-ihsan) "الإحسانِ" denotes benevolence, kindness, and the act of doing good to others.

To understand the deeper implications of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195:

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of spending in the way of Allah and doing good deeds. It highlights that true merit is not merely achieved through personal achievements or material possessions, but rather through acts of benevolence and kindness towards others. By spending in the way of Allah and doing good, we not only benefit those around us but also earn Allah's love and favor.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking Allah's assistance and guidance in all our endeavors. When we engage in acts of benevolence and strive to do good, we should seek Allah's support and ask Him to grant us the strength and ability to continue on the path of righteousness. By doing so, we not only acquire merit but also ensure that our actions are sincere and pleasing to Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that true merit lies in the combination of excellence and benevolence. It is not enough to possess knowledge, wealth, or power; rather, it is how we utilize these blessings for the betterment of others that truly defines our worth in the sight of Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this principle throughout his life. His actions and teachings were always guided by a sincere desire to benefit humanity and uphold justice. He understood that true merit is not achieved through personal accomplishments alone, but rather through selfless acts of kindness and compassion towards others.

As Muslims, we should strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and embody the spirit of this Hadith. We should seek excellence in all aspects of our lives, but never forget the importance of benevolence and doing good to others. By combining these two elements, we can acquire true merit and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in this world and the Hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and ability to practice the teachings of this Hadith and the Quran. May He bless us with the strength to excel in our actions and the compassion to be benevolent towards others. Ameen.
