(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Independent Of Others)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who is independent from people, Allah, the Glorified, enriches him.
This Hadith emphasizes the concept of self-sufficiency and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than depending solely on others for our needs.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (istaghna) "استَغْنى" means to be self-sufficient or independent. It implies being content with what one has and not relying on others for material or emotional needs. The word (an-nas) "النّاسِ" refers to people or mankind in general. And (aghnaahu) "أغْناهُ" means to enrich or make someone wealthy.
To further comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of relying on Him alone and not solely depending on others. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the need to seek sustenance and support directly from Allah, rather than relying on others.
Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah At-Talaq (65:3), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And He will provide for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him.
This verse assures us that when we place our trust in Allah and strive for self-sufficiency, He will provide for us from unexpected sources, enriching us beyond our imagination.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to cultivate a mindset of independence and self-reliance. It does not imply isolating ourselves from society or rejecting the assistance of others when needed. Instead, it urges us to strive for self-sufficiency while recognizing that ultimate reliance should be on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone.
When we become self-sufficient, we free ourselves from the shackles of dependency on others. This independence allows us to focus on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of knowledge. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom, and this Hadith reflects his understanding of the importance of self-sufficiency in nurturing one's intellect and spirituality.
Moreover, when we rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than solely depending on people, we develop a stronger connection with Him. This connection brings about a sense of tranquility and contentment, knowing that our ultimate provider is the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of self-sufficiency and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages us to strive for independence while recognizing that our ultimate sustainer is Allah alone. By cultivating self-sufficiency, we not only free ourselves from the limitations of dependency but also deepen our connection with the Divine. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
