قَدْ أحاطَ عِلْمُ اللّهِ سُبْحانَهُ بِالبَواطِنِ، وأحصىَ الظَّواهِرَ۔
The knowledge of Allah, the Glorified, encompasses the concealed interiors and records the apparent exteriors.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Allah And His Attributes)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states that the knowledge of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encompasses both the concealed interiors and the apparent exteriors. Let us delve deeper into the words and meanings of this Hadith, and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (ahata) "أحاطَ" in Arabic means to encompass or surround. It signifies that the knowledge of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is all-encompassing and all-enveloping. It is not limited to the external manifestations or the surface level of things, but rather, it extends to the innermost depths and hidden realities. This emphasizes the comprehensive nature of Allah's knowledge, which includes everything, whether apparent or concealed.
The term (bawatin) "بَواطِنِ" refers to the concealed interiors or the hidden aspects of things. It encompasses the inner dimensions, intentions, and secrets that are not readily visible to the human eye. This highlights the fact that Allah's knowledge extends beyond what is outwardly apparent, reaching into the depths of our hearts and souls. Allah is aware of our innermost thoughts, desires, and intentions, even before they are expressed or acted upon.
On the other hand, the phrase (adh-dhawahir) "الظَّواهِرَ" refers to the apparent exteriors or the outward manifestations of things. It includes the observable aspects, actions, and behaviors that are visible to others. This implies that Allah's knowledge not only encompasses the hidden realities but also encompasses the external actions and deeds of individuals. Nothing is hidden from Allah, as He is fully aware of what is apparent to us.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support and affirm the all-encompassing knowledge of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:33), Allah says,
And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, 'Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.'
This verse demonstrates that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, including the names of all things. He taught Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) the names of everything, indicating His comprehensive knowledge.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:70), Allah says,
Do you not know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? Indeed, that is in a Record. Indeed, that, for Allah, is easy.
This verse emphasizes that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything in the heavens and the earth. It is recorded in a divine record, indicating His meticulous awareness of every detail, whether hidden or apparent.
The profound implications of this Hadith are manifold. Firstly, it reminds us of the vastness and depth of Allah's knowledge. He knows every aspect of our existence, both the seen and the unseen. This should instill in us a sense of awe and humility, knowing that we are constantly under the watchful gaze of our Creator.
Secondly, this Hadith serves as a reminder that our actions and intentions are not hidden from Allah. We may be able to deceive others or hide our true selves, but we can never escape the knowledge of Allah. This should motivate us to be sincere in our worship, to purify our hearts, and to strive for righteousness in both our inner and outer lives.
Thirdly, this Hadith highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the deeper meanings behind our actions and beliefs. It encourages us to go beyond the superficial and delve into the depths of our faith. By seeking knowledge and understanding, we can align our inner intentions with our outward actions, striving for a harmonious and sincere relationship with Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the all-encompassing knowledge of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It emphasizes that His knowledge extends to both the concealed interiors and the apparent exteriors of all things. This knowledge should inspire us to be mindful of our actions, intentions, and the deeper realities of our faith. May Allah guide us to seek His knowledge and grant us the wisdom to align our inner and outer selves in His obedience.
