(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of generosity and its true essence. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their significance.

The word (generosity) "السَّخاءُ" refers to the act of giving freely and abundantly, without any expectation of return. It is an attribute that reflects the noble character of a person. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that true generosity lies in initiating the act of giving, rather than waiting to be asked.

The phrase (that which one gives [himself]) "ما كانَ ابْتِداءً" implies that true generosity is rooted in selflessness. It is about giving from one's own accord, without any external pressure or obligation. This selfless act of giving is what truly exemplifies the essence of generosity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that if someone gives only after being asked, it is not a manifestation of true generosity. Instead, it is driven by feelings of shame and embarrassment. This implies that giving out of obligation or social pressure does not hold the same value as giving willingly and wholeheartedly.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for further guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:92)

You will never attain righteousness until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.

This verse emphasizes the importance of giving from what we hold dear. It encourages us to go beyond the minimum requirements and give generously from our hearts. True generosity is not merely about fulfilling obligations, but rather about sacrificing what we cherish for the sake of Allah.

Another verse that complements the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Insan, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 76:8-9)

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse highlights the selflessness and sincerity behind true acts of generosity. The believers mentioned in this verse give food to those in need, not for any personal gain or recognition, but solely for the sake of pleasing Allah. Their generosity is driven by their love for Allah and their desire to seek His pleasure.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that true generosity is not limited to material possessions. It encompasses giving our time, knowledge, and resources for the betterment of others. It is about going above and beyond what is expected, without any ulterior motives or seeking praise from others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the true essence of generosity lies in initiating acts of kindness and giving, rather than waiting to be asked. It is a reflection of our selflessness, love for Allah, and concern for the well-being of others. By embodying the spirit of true generosity, we can strive to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and the noble Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be truly generous and selfless in our actions, and may He accept our efforts to seek His pleasure.
