(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sincerity And Devotion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الإخلاصُ شيمةُ أفاضِلِ النَّاسِ
which translates to
Sincerity is the attribute of the most excellent people.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of sincerity in the character of individuals and highlights it as a distinguishing quality of the virtuous.
The word (ikhlas) "إخلاص" in this Hadith refers to sincerity or purity of intention. It signifies the act of performing actions solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) without any ulterior motives or desires for worldly gains. It is the state of being completely devoted to Allah and seeking His pleasure above all else.
The term (shimah) "شيمة" in this Hadith means attribute or characteristic. It implies that sincerity is not just an occasional act, but rather a quality that should be ingrained in the personality of individuals who aspire to be among the best of people.
The significance of sincerity in Islam can be understood through various Quranic verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5),
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
This verse highlights that sincerity is a fundamental aspect of true faith and the correct practice of religion.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], 'We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.' Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.
This verse warns against associating partners with Allah and emphasizes the importance of sincerity in worship.
The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the significance of sincerity in various aspects of a Muslim's life. Sincerity is not limited to acts of worship but extends to all actions and intentions. It is the driving force behind seeking knowledge, performing acts of charity, maintaining good character, and fulfilling responsibilities.
When a Muslim acts with sincerity, their intentions are pure and focused solely on pleasing Allah. This purity of intention leads to a greater sense of accountability and consciousness in their actions. They strive to excel in their deeds, not for the sake of recognition or praise from others, but for the sake of Allah alone.
Sincerity also serves as a protection against hypocrisy and insincerity. It acts as a shield against the desire for worldly gains and prevents individuals from seeking validation or approval from others. It allows Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith and actions, even in the face of challenges or temptations.
Moreover, sincerity has far-reaching consequences in the life of a Muslim. It brings about a sense of contentment and inner peace, as they find solace in knowing that their actions are solely for the sake of Allah. It also strengthens their relationship with Allah, as they develop a deeper connection and reliance on Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of sincerity as a distinguishing attribute of the most excellent people. Sincerity is the quality of performing actions solely for the sake of Allah, without any ulterior motives or desires for worldly gains. It is a fundamental aspect of true faith and the correct practice of religion. Sincerity permeates all aspects of a Muslim's life, leading to greater accountability, protection against hypocrisy, and a stronger relationship with Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate sincerity in our intentions and actions, and may He make us among the most excellent people.
