(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Schemer And Plotter)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The one who is always scheming [against others] is a devil in the form of a human being.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the deceptive nature of those individuals who constantly plot and scheme against others. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The word (makoor) "مَكُورُ" in this Hadith refers to someone who is constantly scheming, plotting, and deceiving others. This individual is not only engaged in harmful actions but also possesses a cunning nature, much like a devil. The word (shaytan) "شَيْطَانٌ" refers to a devil or a satanic being, known for its evil and deceptive nature. Lastly, the phrase (fi suratil-insan) "فِي صُورَةِ الإنْسَانِ" means

in the form of a human being,

emphasizing that these individuals may appear to be human but possess the characteristics of a devil.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the concept of deception and scheming. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the hypocrites who pretend to be believers but harbor ill intentions in their hearts. Allah says,

They are like the example of Satan when he says to man, 'Disbelieve.' But when he disbelieves, he says, 'Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.'

This verse highlights the deceptive nature of the hypocrites, who pretend to be righteous but are actually working against the believers.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the plots of the disbelievers. Allah says,

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

This verse demonstrates that while the disbelievers may scheme and plot against the believers, Allah's plans are superior and will ultimately prevail.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of those who engage in constant scheming and plotting. Such individuals may appear to be human, but their intentions and actions are driven by evil. They seek to harm and deceive others, just like the devil himself.

The consequences of falling into the trap of these schemers can be severe. They may cause divisions within communities, spread false information, and create discord among believers. It is crucial for Muslims to be vigilant and not be swayed by the deceptive tactics of these individuals. Instead, we should seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his pure progeny, who exemplify righteousness and honesty.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be individuals who promote unity, honesty, and sincerity within our communities. We should be aware of the signs of deception and not allow ourselves to be manipulated by those who seek to harm us. By following the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, we can protect ourselves from the schemes of the devil in human form.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the plots of the deceitful and grant us the wisdom to discern between truth and falsehood. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and keep us steadfast in our faith. Ameen.
