إنَّ رَأيَكَ لا يَتَّسِعُ لِكُلِّ شَيْء، فَفَرِّغْهُ لِلْمُهِمِّ۔
Indeed your opinion cannot encompass everything, so leave it for the important [issues].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opinions And The Opinonated)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of recognizing the limitations of our opinions and judgements. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, advises us that our understanding and perspective are not comprehensive enough to encompass all matters. Therefore, we should prioritize and focus our attention on what truly matters.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (ra'yaka) "رَأْيَكَ" refers to one's opinion or judgement. It signifies the subjective understanding and viewpoint of an individual. The word (yattasi'u) "يَتَّسِعُ" means to encompass or contain. It implies that our opinions cannot fully comprehend or grasp the entirety of a situation or issue. And finally, the word (muhim) "مُهِمِّ" translates to important or significant matters.
To further understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse highlights the importance of not forming opinions or making judgements without proper knowledge and understanding. It cautions us against delving into matters beyond our comprehension.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the need for thorough investigation and verification before forming opinions or passing judgements. It warns against the potential harm that can arise from hasty and uninformed decisions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, understood the limitations of human understanding. He recognized that our opinions are shaped by our limited experiences, biases, and lack of complete knowledge. Therefore, he advises us to leave our opinions aside when it comes to matters that are beyond our comprehension or expertise.
By adhering to this advice, we can avoid unnecessary conflicts, misunderstandings, and misjudgments. We can focus our energy and attention on matters that truly require our attention and expertise. This Hadith encourages us to approach complex issues with humility, open-mindedness, and a willingness to learn from others who may have greater knowledge or expertise in those areas.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the limitations of our opinions and the importance of prioritizing our focus on what truly matters. It urges us to seek knowledge, verify information, and refrain from forming opinions on matters beyond our understanding. By doing so, we can cultivate a mindset of humility, wisdom, and continuous growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize the limitations of our opinions and guide us towards seeking knowledge and understanding.
