لاوِزْرَ أعْظَمُ مِنَ التَّبَجُّجِ بِالفُجُورِ۔
There is no vice greater than rejoicing in acts of depravity.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاوِزْرَ أعْظَمُ مِنَ التَّبَجُّجِ بِالفُجُورِ۔
This can be translated as,
There is no vice greater than rejoicing in acts of depravity.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (tabajjaj) "تَبَجُّجِ" refers to expressing joy or delight, while (al-fujur) "الفُجُورِ" signifies acts of immorality, wickedness, or sinfulness.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2),
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding sinful acts and not finding joy or pleasure in them. It is a reminder to Muslims that our actions should be guided by righteousness and piety, and we should not take delight in engaging in sinful behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding negative assumptions about others. Rejoicing in acts of depravity often stems from a judgmental mindset and a tendency to assume the worst about others. Such assumptions are sinful and go against the teachings of Islam.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us through this Hadith that there is no greater vice than finding joy in acts of depravity. This statement serves as a powerful reminder to Muslims to distance themselves from sinful behavior and to always strive for righteousness and piety.
When we rejoice in acts of depravity, we not only indulge in sinful behavior ourselves but also contribute to a culture that normalizes immorality. Our actions have consequences, and they can influence others around us. By taking pleasure in sinful acts, we risk leading others astray and perpetuating a cycle of wrongdoing.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should ask ourselves: What motivates us to find joy in acts of depravity? Is it a lack of understanding of the consequences? Is it a desire to fit in or seek temporary pleasure? By critically examining our motivations, we can better understand the root causes of such behavior and work towards rectifying them.
As Muslims, we are called to be a source of guidance and righteousness for others. We should strive to embody the teachings of Islam and set a positive example for those around us. Instead of rejoicing in acts of depravity, we should find joy in acts of worship, kindness, and compassion. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also contribute to a society that upholds moral values and promotes goodness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to avoid finding joy in acts of depravity. It calls us to reflect on our motivations, understand the consequences of our actions, and strive for righteousness and piety. By adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can lead lives that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and serve as beacons of light in a world that often glorifies immorality. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the allure of sinful acts.
