اَلأملُ يُفْسِدُ العَمَلَ، ويُفنِي الأجَلَ۔
Hope corrupts [one’s] actions and wastes [one’s] lifetime.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hopes And Aspirations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Hope corrupts [one’s] actions and wastes [one’s] lifetime.
This thought-provoking saying highlights the negative consequences of excessive hope and its impact on our actions and the duration of our lives.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (amal) "أمل" translates to "hope" or "expectation." It refers to the feeling of anticipation or desire for something to happen in the future. The word (yufsidu) "يُفْسِدُ" means "corrupts" or "spoils," indicating the detrimental effect that hope can have on our actions. Lastly, the word (yufni) "يُفنِي" means "wastes" or "destroys," emphasizing the negative impact of hope on the duration of our lives.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the fleeting nature of worldly desires and the consequences of being attached to them. Allah says,
So that you may not grieve over what has escaped you, nor exult [in pride] at what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
This verse reminds us that excessive hope in worldly desires can lead to grief and pride, which in turn corrupts our actions. When we become too attached to our hopes and desires, we may lose sight of our true purpose in life and engage in actions that are not in line with the teachings of Islam.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of hypocrisy and insincerity in our actions. Allah says,
O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers.
This verse reminds us that when we prioritize worldly hopes and desires over our devotion to Allah, our actions become corrupted and we lose sight of our true purpose. Our hope should be directed towards the Hereafter and seeking the pleasure of Allah, rather than being solely focused on worldly gains.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to strike a balance between hope and action. While hope can be a driving force for motivation and progress, excessive hope can lead to complacency and a neglect of our responsibilities towards Allah and our fellow human beings.
Excessive hope can corrupt our actions by blinding us to the reality of our actions and their consequences. It can lead us to rely solely on hope without taking the necessary steps and putting in the effort to achieve our goals. This can result in wasted opportunities and a squandering of our limited time in this world.
For example, if a person hopes for success in their studies but does not put in the necessary effort and dedication, their hope becomes futile and their actions are corrupted. Similarly, if a person hopes for forgiveness from Allah but does not strive to repent and improve their actions, their hope becomes empty and their actions are wasted.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to have a balanced approach to hope and action. We should have hope in the mercy and blessings of Allah, but it should be accompanied by sincere and consistent efforts to fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the negative consequences of excessive hope. It reminds us to strike a balance between hope and action, ensuring that our hopes are aligned with the teachings of Islam and that our actions are sincere and in accordance with the guidance of Allah. May Allah guide us to have balanced hopes and actions, and may He grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
