(Ghurar al-Hikam: Inward Thoughts And Feelings)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One whose inward [feeling] is good [and honourable] is not afraid of anyone.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having a virtuous and noble character, which brings about inner peace and confidence. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (hasunat) "حَسُنَتْ" in the Hadith refers to goodness, beauty, and excellence. It signifies having a pure and righteous character that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This goodness is not merely external, but it encompasses the innermost feelings and intentions of an individual. It is the state of one's heart and soul that determines their true character.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of inward goodness in several verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety, not in external appearances or worldly status.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), Allah states,

Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

This verse reminds us that true guidance comes from Allah alone, and it is bestowed upon those who possess a pure and sincere heart. Such individuals are not afraid of anyone because they rely on Allah's guidance and protection.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when our inward character is virtuous and honorable, we become fearless and confident. This is because a person with a good heart is not swayed by the opinions or judgments of others. They are not afraid of being misunderstood or falsely accused because they know that their intentions are pure and their actions are in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this quality of inward goodness and fearlessness. His knowledge, wisdom, and piety were unparalleled among the companions of the Prophet (). He fearlessly stood up for justice and truth, even in the face of adversity. His unwavering faith and righteousness made him a source of inspiration for Muslims throughout history.

When we cultivate a good inward character, we develop a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His pleasure above all else. We become resilient in the face of challenges and difficulties, knowing that Allah is always with us. This inner strength allows us to face the world with confidence and courage, without being intimidated by anyone.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of cultivating a good inward character. It teaches us that true nobility and fearlessness come from having a pure heart and sincere intentions. By seeking Allah's pleasure and following the teachings of Islam, we can attain inner peace and confidence, enabling us to face any situation with strength and resilience. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to develop a virtuous character and protect us from all fears.
