Hadith #5944

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أهْلَكُ شَيْء اِسْتِدامَةُ الضّلالِ۔

This can be translated as,

The most destructive thing is persistent deviation.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (ahlaq) "أهْلَكُ" means destruction or annihilation. It signifies a state of complete ruin and devastation. The word (shay') "شَيْء" refers to a thing or an object. (istidamah) "اِسْتِدامَةُ" means persistence or continuity. It implies the act of consistently remaining in a particular state or condition. Finally, (dhalal) "الضّلالِ" refers to deviation or straying from the right path.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:120),

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion.

And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah.
