إذا رَغِبْتَ فِي المَكارِمِ فَاجْتَنِبِ المَحارِمَ۔
When you desire to acquire noble traits then keep away from the forbidden.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Noble Traits & Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When you desire to acquire noble traits then keep away from the forbidden.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of avoiding sinful actions in order to attain virtuous qualities. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word "raghibta" in the Hadith refers to the desire or aspiration to acquire noble traits or virtues. It reflects the human inclination towards goodness and righteousness. As Muslims, we are encouraged to strive for excellence in our character and conduct, seeking to embody the noble qualities exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
On the other hand, the word "maharim" in the Hadith refers to the forbidden or prohibited actions. These are the actions that have been explicitly prohibited by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). They include acts such as lying, backbiting, stealing, and engaging in unlawful relationships.
To understand the significance of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This ayah emphasizes the importance of avoiding ridicule, insults, and offensive behavior towards others. It teaches us to treat people with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or social status. By refraining from such negative actions, we are able to cultivate noble traits such as kindness, empathy, and humility.
Another Quranic verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:90), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.
This verse highlights the prohibition of intoxicants, gambling, and other forms of idolatry. By abstaining from these forbidden actions, we are able to maintain purity and righteousness in our lives. This avoidance of the prohibited leads to the acquisition of noble traits such as self-control, discipline, and piety.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences and directly impact our character. When we engage in forbidden actions, we tarnish our souls and distance ourselves from the path of righteousness. Conversely, when we refrain from the forbidden, we create space for the cultivation of noble traits and virtues.
For example, if one desires to acquire the noble trait of honesty, they must refrain from lying and deceitful behavior. By consistently avoiding falsehood, one's character is strengthened, and they become known for their integrity and trustworthiness. Similarly, if one desires to acquire the noble trait of patience, they must avoid impulsive and hasty actions. Through patience and perseverance in the face of challenges, one's character is refined, and they become known for their resilience and steadfastness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to strive for noble traits by avoiding the forbidden. By refraining from sinful actions and adhering to the teachings of the Quran, we are able to cultivate virtuous qualities and attain spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to follow the path of righteousness and acquire noble traits.
