— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالعَدْلِ تَتَضاعَفُ البَرَكاتُ۔" This can be translated as,

Through justice, bounties are multiplied.

In this impactful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense significance of justice and its direct correlation with blessings and prosperity.

The word (adl) "عَدْلِ" in this Hadith refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It encompasses the concept of treating others with equality and ensuring that everyone is given their due rights. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized in both the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is the ultimate embodiment of justice, and He commands believers to uphold justice in all aspects of their lives.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of justice. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.

This verse highlights that the messengers were sent with the divine scriptures and the balance of justice to guide people towards a just and balanced way of life.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands the believers,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.

This verse emphasizes the importance of standing up for justice, even if it means going against one's own interests or the interests of loved ones. It highlights the significance of justice in maintaining social harmony and upholding the rights of all individuals.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith under discussion further reinforces the Quranic teachings on justice. By stating that bounties are multiplied through justice, he highlights the positive consequences that arise from practicing justice in all aspects of life. When justice prevails, it creates an environment of fairness, trust, and harmony, which in turn leads to the multiplication of blessings and prosperity.

For example, in a just society, people are more likely to fulfill their obligations and responsibilities towards one another. This leads to the establishment of strong social bonds, cooperation, and mutual support. Consequently, individuals feel secure and content, and the society as a whole experiences progress and prosperity.

On the other hand, when injustice prevails, it leads to oppression, inequality, and the violation of rights. This creates an atmosphere of discontent, mistrust, and instability, which hinders the growth and development of individuals and society. In such circumstances, blessings are diminished, and the potential for prosperity is stifled.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, Muslims are reminded of the importance of justice in all aspects of their lives. They are encouraged to strive for justice in their personal interactions, family relationships, and societal affairs. By doing so, they not only fulfill their religious obligations but also contribute to the well-being and prosperity of their communities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of justice in Islam. Through justice, bounties are multiplied, leading to blessings and prosperity. Muslims are reminded to uphold justice in all aspects of their lives, as it is a fundamental principle of their faith. By practicing justice, they contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society, where blessings are multiplied, and the potential for prosperity is realized. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be just and grant us His abundant blessings.
