لَيْسَ كُلُّ طالِب بِمَرْزُوق۔
Not every seeker is granted [sustenance].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Seeker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and upon his noble companions.
The Arabic phrase of the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is
لَيْسَ كُلُّ طالِب بِمَرْزُوق۔
This phrase can be transliterated as
laysa kullu ṭālibin bimarzūq.
Let us now delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (ṭālib) "طالِب" in Arabic refers to a seeker or one who seeks something. In this context, it refers to someone who seeks sustenance or provisions from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The word (marzūq) "مَرْزُوق" refers to being granted sustenance or provisions by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses all forms of sustenance, including food, wealth, knowledge, and blessings.
This Hadith highlights the fact that not every seeker is granted sustenance by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a reminder to Muslims that while it is important to seek provisions and work hard for them, ultimately, it is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) who determines who is granted sustenance.
To further understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80):
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking sustenance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and acknowledging that it is ultimately His provision that sustains us. It reminds us to seek His blessings and guidance in all our endeavors.
Another verse that sheds light on this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:62):
Allah enlarges the provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts it for him. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.
This verse highlights the fact that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has complete control over the provision and sustenance of His servants. He grants sustenance to whom He wills and restricts it for others. It is a reminder for Muslims to put their trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to be content with whatever provision they are granted.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that it serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek sustenance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with humility and gratitude. It teaches us to work hard and strive for provisions, but also to recognize that it is ultimately Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) who determines our sustenance.
This Hadith also reminds us of the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and trusting in His wisdom. It encourages us to have faith that whatever provision we are granted is what is best for us, even if it may not be what we initially desired or expected.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Not every seeker is granted [sustenance]
serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to seek sustenance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with humility and gratitude, while recognizing that it is ultimately Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) who determines our provisions. It encourages us to work hard, trust in Allah's wisdom, and be content with whatever sustenance we are granted. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with His abundant provisions and guide us on the path of righteousness.
