(Ghurar al-Hikam: Noble Traits & Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنْ أحْسَنِ المَكارِمِ بَثُّ المَعْرُوفِ۔
This can be translated as,
One of the best noble deeds is spreading goodness [and virtue].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (bath) "بَثُّ" in the Hadith refers to the act of spreading or disseminating. It implies actively promoting and propagating goodness and virtue among others. This encompasses various acts of kindness, compassion, and righteousness that contribute to the betterment of society and the well-being of individuals.
The term (al-ma'ruf) "المَعْرُوفِ" in the Hadith refers to that which is recognized and acknowledged as good and virtuous in accordance with Islamic teachings. It encompasses all acts of righteousness, including acts of charity, justice, honesty, forgiveness, and compassion. Spreading goodness and virtue involves encouraging and inspiring others to engage in these noble actions.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of spreading goodness and virtue. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:77),
O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good - that you may succeed.
This verse highlights the connection between worshiping Allah and performing good deeds. It implies that spreading goodness is an integral part of our faith and a means to attain success in this life and the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.'
This verse highlights the importance of doing good to others, including family, orphans, and the needy. It also emphasizes the significance of speaking good words, which includes spreading goodness and virtue through our interactions with others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement underscores the significance of actively engaging in acts of kindness and righteousness. It encourages Muslims to take the initiative in spreading goodness and virtue in their communities. By doing so, we not only fulfill our individual responsibilities but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.
When we actively spread goodness and virtue, we inspire others to follow suit. Our actions can have a ripple effect, leading to a positive transformation in the lives of those around us. For example, a simple act of kindness, such as helping a neighbor in need, can inspire others to do the same. This creates a cycle of goodness that has the potential to bring about positive change in society.
Moreover, spreading goodness and virtue also has a profound impact on our own spiritual growth. When we engage in acts of kindness and righteousness, we strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and increase our proximity to Him. The more we spread goodness, the more our hearts are filled with love, compassion, and empathy. This leads to a sense of fulfillment and contentment in our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of spreading goodness and virtue as one of the best noble deeds. It encourages Muslims to actively engage in acts of kindness, compassion, and righteousness, thereby contributing to the betterment of society. By doing so, we not only fulfill our individual responsibilities but also inspire others to follow suit. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to spread goodness and virtue and make us a source of positive change in the world.
