(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Pleased And Satisfied)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The cornerstone of contentment is satisfaction [with the decree of Allah].
This impactful saying highlights the essence of true contentment and satisfaction in the face of life's challenges and trials. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (qana'ah) "قَنَاعَة" in Arabic, translated as "contentment," refers to a state of inner peace and tranquility that arises from being satisfied with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has decreed for us. It is a state of being free from excessive desires, envy, and greed. Contentment is not merely accepting one's circumstances passively, but rather embracing them with gratitude and trust in Allah's wisdom and plan.
The phrase (ar-rida) "الرِّضَا" means "satisfaction" or "pleasure." It signifies a deep level of acceptance and approval of Allah's decree, even if it may not align with our personal desires or expectations. It is an active state of the heart that acknowledges the perfection of Allah's plan and submits to His will.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of contentment and satisfaction with Allah's decree. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155-157)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
This verse highlights the importance of patience and acceptance in the face of trials and tribulations. The believers who are content with Allah's decree and trust in His plan are the ones who receive blessings and mercy from Him. Their contentment stems from their unwavering faith and understanding that everything that happens is ultimately for their own good.
Another verse that supports the concept of contentment is found in Surah At-Tawbah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 9:51)
Say, 'Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.' And upon Allah let the believers rely.
This verse reminds us that whatever befalls us is by the decree of Allah, and He is the ultimate protector and caretaker. The believers are encouraged to place their trust in Allah and rely on Him alone. This reliance on Allah's decree fosters contentment and peace in their hearts, knowing that He is the best of planners.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the importance of contentment as the foundation of true satisfaction. When we are content with Allah's decree, we are able to find peace and happiness in every situation, regardless of whether it aligns with our desires or not. Contentment allows us to appreciate the blessings we have been given and to navigate through life's challenges with grace and resilience.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this quality of contentment throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained steadfast and satisfied with Allah's decree. His unwavering contentment served as a source of inspiration for Muslims throughout history.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true contentment lies in being satisfied with Allah's decree. It is through embracing His plan and trusting in His wisdom that we can find inner peace and tranquility. By cultivating contentment, we can navigate through life's challenges with grace and gratitude, knowing that every situation is ultimately for our own good. May Allah grant us the ability to attain true contentment and satisfaction in our lives.
