Hadith #4330

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong bonds with our near relatives. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that such connections not only result in material wealth but also prolong one's lifespan. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this profound Hadith in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (silat al-arham) "صِلَةُ الأرحامِ", which translates to

keeping ties with near relatives.

The term (silah) "صِلَةُ" refers to the act of connecting or maintaining a relationship, while (al-arham) "الأرحامِ" specifically refers to one's blood relatives. This includes immediate family members such as parents, siblings, and children, as well as extended family members like aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining family ties in several verses. In Surah An-Nisa (4:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands Muslims to

maintain the ties of kinship.

This verse highlights the obligation upon Muslims to uphold and nurture their relationships with their relatives. By doing so, they fulfill a divine commandment and strengthen the fabric of their society.

Furthermore, in Surah Muhammad (47:22-23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against severing family ties and emphasizes the rewards of maintaining them. He says,

So, do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection, they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do. Those are the ones who have exchanged guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment. How patient they are in pursuit of the Fire!

From these verses, we can understand that maintaining family ties is not only a social obligation but also a means of attaining spiritual and worldly benefits. By nurturing these relationships, Muslims create a harmonious and compassionate society, which is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Moreover, the act of silat al-arham brings about blessings and prosperity in various aspects of life, including wealth and longevity.

When we reflect on the consequences of severing family ties, we realize that it leads to a breakdown in relationships, causing emotional pain and societal discord. It creates a void in the lives of individuals and weakens the bonds that hold families together. Moreover, the severing of family ties can have long-lasting effects on future generations, as the cycle of disconnection perpetuates itself.

On the other hand, maintaining strong family ties has numerous positive consequences. It fosters love, understanding, and support within the family unit. It creates a sense of belonging and security, enabling individuals to thrive and succeed in their personal and professional lives. Additionally, when family members are united, they can pool their resources and work together towards common goals, leading to financial stability and prosperity.

In terms of longevity, the Hadith suggests that maintaining family ties can delay death. This can be understood in two ways. Firstly, when individuals are surrounded by a loving and supportive family, they experience less stress and emotional burden, which can contribute to a longer and healthier life. Secondly, the act of silat al-arham is a righteous deed that earns the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). As a result, Allah may extend the lifespan of those who fulfill this duty, allowing them more time to engage in acts of worship and righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of maintaining ties with our near relatives. By nurturing these relationships, we not only fulfill a divine commandment but also reap numerous benefits in this world and the hereafter. Silat al-arham strengthens the fabric of society, brings about material wealth, and prolongs one's lifespan. As Muslims, let us strive to uphold these family ties and foster love, compassion, and unity within our families. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to fulfill this important duty and grant us the rewards promised for doing so.
