(Ghurar al-Hikam: People)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الناس بخير ما تفاوتوا

which translates to

People are fine as long as they are dissimilar from one another.

This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds great significance and can be understood in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (tafawwutu) "تفاوتوا" in the Hadith refers to the state of being dissimilar or different from one another. It implies that people are at their best when they possess unique qualities, talents, and characteristics that complement and enrich society as a whole. This diversity is a blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and should be embraced rather than rejected.

The Quranic teachings emphasize the importance of diversity and the unique qualities that each individual possesses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that diversity among people is a means for them to recognize and appreciate one another. It teaches us that the best among us are those who possess righteousness and piety, regardless of their differences in ethnicity, race, or social status. Thus, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to value and embrace the diversity that exists within the ummah.

Furthermore, the Quranic teachings also emphasize the importance of unity and cooperation among Muslims. In Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers.

This verse highlights the significance of unity and the need to come together as a community, despite our differences. It reminds us that our strength lies in our unity and cooperation, and that we should not allow our dissimilarities to divide us. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reinforces this message by reminding us that as long as we are dissimilar from one another, we can coexist peacefully and contribute positively to society.

The profound wisdom behind this Hadith is that when people possess unique qualities and talents, they can complement and benefit one another. Imagine a society where everyone is the same, with no differences in skills, abilities, or perspectives. Such a society would lack innovation, creativity, and progress. It is through our differences that we can learn from one another, grow together, and build a harmonious society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his vast knowledge and wisdom. His statement in this Hadith reflects his deep understanding of human nature and the importance of diversity in society. He recognized that it is through our dissimilarities that we can truly flourish and reach our full potential as individuals and as a community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of embracing diversity and valuing the unique qualities that each individual possesses. It reminds us that as long as we are dissimilar from one another, we can coexist peacefully and contribute positively to society. Let us strive to appreciate and celebrate our differences, for it is through them that we can learn, grow, and build a stronger ummah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the teachings of the Quran and the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
