(Ghurar al-Hikam: Enmity And The Enemy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كَثْرَةُ العَداوَةِ عَناءُ القُلُوبِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the negative consequences of harboring excessive enmity in one's heart. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (kathrah) "كَثْرَةُ" means "abundance" or "excess." It refers to an overwhelming amount or an excessive quantity. In this context, it signifies an excessive amount of enmity or animosity. The word (al-'adawwah) "العَداوَةِ" means "enmity" or "hostility." It refers to a deep-seated animosity or hatred towards someone. Finally, the word (‘ana’) "عَناءُ" means "disquiet" or "unease." It denotes a state of restlessness, discomfort, or agitation.

To comprehend the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the importance of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. Excessive enmity can disrupt this harmony and create division within the community. It can lead to animosity, grudges, and a breakdown of relationships, causing unrest and unease in the hearts of believers.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2) that we should not let our personal animosities and biases cloud our judgment and fairness. He says,

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

Excessive enmity can blind us to the principles of righteousness and justice, leading us to engage in sinful behavior and aggression. It disrupts the balance and harmony that Allah has ordained for us.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the detrimental effects of excessive enmity on the hearts. When our hearts are filled with animosity, they become restless, troubled, and burdened. The negative emotions associated with enmity, such as anger, resentment, and bitterness, consume our hearts and prevent us from experiencing peace and tranquility.

Moreover, excessive enmity can have far-reaching consequences. It not only affects our personal well-being but also impacts our relationships with others. It hinders forgiveness, reconciliation, and the ability to let go of grudges. It creates a toxic environment that breeds hatred and discord, weakening the bonds of brotherhood and unity within the Muslim community.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate love, compassion, and forgiveness in our hearts. We should seek to resolve conflicts and disagreements with wisdom, patience, and understanding. By doing so, we can create an atmosphere of peace and harmony, in line with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the detrimental effects of excessive enmity on the hearts of believers. It urges us to avoid harboring excessive animosity and instead foster love, compassion, and forgiveness. By doing so, we can maintain unity, peace, and tranquility within ourselves and our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and protect our hearts from the disquiet of excessive enmity.
