Whoever observes excesses being committed and people being called towards evil, and disapproves of it with his heart, is safe and free [from responsibility for it], and whoever disapproves of it with his tongue will be rewarded for it, and he is in a higher position than the former. But whoever disapproves of it with his sword in order that the proof of Allah may remain superior and the word of the oppressors may remain inferior, has found the path of guidance and stands on the right way while his heart is illuminated with conviction.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of standing against wrongdoing and evil. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that whoever witnesses acts of oppression and evil being committed, and people being called towards them, has a responsibility to respond in different ways depending on their capabilities.

The Hadith begins by stating that if a person disapproves of the wrongdoing in their heart, they are considered safe and free from responsibility for it. This means that if one internally detests the evil and oppression they witness, they have fulfilled their duty to reject it. This internal rejection is a sign of a pure heart and a strong faith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 28:55)

And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'

This verse highlights the importance of turning away from evil speech and not engaging in it.

Furthermore, the Hadith states that if a person verbally disapproves of the wrongdoing, they will be rewarded for it. By speaking out against evil, one not only fulfills their duty but also encourages others to do the same. This act of speaking out against oppression is praiseworthy and aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:83)

And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of using kind and good words when communicating with others.

Moreover, the Hadith highlights the highest level of response to evil, which is to physically oppose it with a sword. This level of response is reserved for those who have the capability and authority to do so. By using the sword, one aims to establish justice and ensure that the proof of Allah remains superior. This means that they are defending the truth and upholding the principles of Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 2:251)

And if Allah had not repelled some people by others, the earth would have been corrupted. But Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.

This verse highlights the importance of standing up against oppression and maintaining justice in society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that those who oppose evil with their sword are on the path of guidance and stand on the right way. Their hearts are illuminated with conviction, as they are willing to sacrifice and fight for the sake of justice. This level of commitment and dedication is a reflection of the deep knowledge and understanding that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed. He was known for his wisdom, bravery, and unwavering faith.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of opposing evil and standing up for justice. It emphasizes that there are different levels of response depending on one's capabilities. Whether it is through internal rejection, verbal disapproval, or physical opposition, every Muslim has a responsibility to reject wrongdoing and promote goodness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the right path and grant us the strength to stand against oppression.
