عِنْدَ العَرْضِ عَلَى اللّهِ سُبْحانَهُ تَتَحَقَّقُ السَّعادَةُ مِنَ الشَّقاءِ۔
When the presentation [of deeds] in front of Allah, the Glorified, takes place, felicity is differentiated from wretchedness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Felicity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When the presentation [of deeds] in front of Allah, the Glorified, takes place, felicity is differentiated from wretchedness.
This Hadith highlights the significance of the Day of Judgment, where the true nature of our actions and their consequences will be revealed.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (tatahaqqaqu) "تَتَحَقَّقُ" means "to be differentiated" or "to be distinguished." It implies that on the Day of Judgment, the true state of happiness and misery will become clear. The word (sa'adah) "السَّعادَةُ" refers to "felicity" or "happiness," while (shaqaa) "الشَّقاءِ" denotes "wretchedness" or "misery."
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the Day of Judgment and the differentiation between the righteous and the wicked. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:30)
On the Day when every soul will find present what it has done of good and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance
This verse highlights the regret and remorse that will be experienced by those who led a life of wickedness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, Allah states, (Quran 11:108)
And those who are [deserving of] felicity will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted
This verse emphasizes that true happiness and felicity will be granted to the righteous believers, who will dwell in Paradise eternally.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their actions in this worldly life. It urges us to strive for righteousness and avoid actions that lead to wretchedness. On the Day of Judgment, our deeds will be presented before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and the true nature of our actions will be revealed. This differentiation between felicity and wretchedness will have profound consequences for our eternal life.
For instance, if a person spends their life in pursuit of material wealth and worldly pleasures, neglecting their obligations towards Allah and their fellow human beings, they may experience temporary happiness in this world. However, on the Day of Judgment, their true state of wretchedness will be exposed. Conversely, those who prioritize their faith, perform righteous deeds, and strive to please Allah will attain everlasting felicity in the Hereafter.
This Hadith also highlights the importance of self-reflection and introspection. Muslims are encouraged to constantly evaluate their actions and intentions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, they can strive for true happiness and avoid the path of wretchedness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of the Day of Judgment, where felicity will be differentiated from wretchedness. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their actions and strive for righteousness in order to attain eternal happiness in the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all to the path of righteousness and grant us felicity in this life and the Hereafter.
