عِمارَةُ القُلُوبِ في مُعاشَرَةِ ذَوِى العُقُولِ۔
The development of the hearts is in socializing with people of intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Social Interaction And Mingling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
عِمارَةُ القُلُوبِ في مُعاشَرَةِ ذَوِى العُقُولِ
which translates to
The development of the hearts is in socializing with people of intellect.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who possess wisdom and intellect.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. "عِمارَةُ" refers to the development, growth, or nurturing of something. "القُلُوبِ" refers to the hearts, which symbolize the core of our being, encompassing our thoughts, emotions, and spirituality. "مُعاشَرَةِ" means socializing or associating with others. And "ذَوِى العُقُولِ" refers to people of intellect or wisdom.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and surrounding ourselves with those who possess wisdom. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between individuals who possess knowledge and those who do not. By socializing with people of intellect, we have the opportunity to gain knowledge, broaden our perspectives, and develop our hearts.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:190-191), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'
These verses highlight the importance of pondering upon the signs of Allah's creation and seeking understanding. By engaging in discussions and interactions with people of intellect, we can gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement urges us to be mindful of the company we keep. When we surround ourselves with individuals who possess wisdom and intellect, we are more likely to be influenced positively. Their knowledge, insights, and guidance can help us in our personal growth, spiritual development, and decision-making.
Conversely, if we choose to associate with individuals who lack intellect or engage in negative behavior, it can have detrimental effects on our hearts and overall well-being. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also emphasized the importance of choosing righteous companions, as he said, (Sunan Abu Dawood)
A person is upon the religion of their close friend, so let one of you look at whom they befriend.
By socializing with people of intellect, we expose ourselves to different perspectives, ideas, and experiences. This exposure broadens our horizons, challenges our assumptions, and encourages critical thinking. It allows us to learn from the wisdom and experiences of others, enabling personal growth and development.
Moreover, socializing with people of intellect can have a positive impact on our character and behavior. Their influence can inspire us to strive for excellence, seek knowledge, and practice virtues such as patience, humility, and compassion. Their guidance can help us navigate through challenges and make wise decisions, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with people of intellect. By engaging in meaningful interactions and discussions with individuals who possess wisdom, we can nurture the development of our hearts, gain knowledge, and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to seek the company of those who inspire us to grow intellectually, spiritually, and morally, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the wisdom to choose our companions wisely.
