ما الدُّنيا غَرَّتْكَ، وَلكِنْ بِهَا اغْتَرَرْتَ۔
This world has not deceived you, rather through it you have been deceived.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
This world has not deceived you, rather through it you have been deceived.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (gharratka) "غَرَّتْكَ" in the Hadith refers to deception or delusion. It implies being misled or tricked into believing something that is not true. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing that the world itself is not inherently deceptive, but rather it is our own attachment and preoccupation with it that leads to deception.
This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and the potential for them to distract us from the true purpose of our existence. In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20, Allah says,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
Here, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that the allure of worldly possessions and achievements is temporary and fleeting. It may initially bring pleasure and satisfaction, but ultimately it withers away, leaving us empty-handed. This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the world itself is not deceptive, but our attachment to it can lead to delusion and distraction from the ultimate purpose of our existence - the worship and obedience of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of self-reflection and introspection. It urges us to examine our own actions, intentions, and priorities. It is not the world that deceives us, but rather our own desires and attachments that lead us astray. This is beautifully illustrated in Surah Al-Imran, verse 14, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.
This verse reminds us that the allure of worldly possessions and desires can blind us to the true purpose of our existence. It is not the world itself that deceives us, but rather our own attachment to it. We become so engrossed in the pursuit of wealth, status, and material possessions that we lose sight of the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening saying serves as a wake-up call for all Muslims. It urges us to reflect upon our own actions and priorities, and to detach ourselves from the transient nature of this world. By recognizing the true value of the Hereafter and prioritizing our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can avoid falling into the trap of worldly deception.
Let us heed the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to detach ourselves from the allure of this world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to prioritize our relationship with Him and seek His pleasure above all else. May we be among those who are not deceived by the world, but rather remain steadfast in our pursuit of the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
