زُهْدُكَ فِي الدُّنيا يُنْجيكَ، ورَغْبَتُكَ فيها تُرْديكَ۔
Your renunciation of this world will save you and your desire for it will cause you to fall into destruction.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Renunciation Of Worldly Pleasures)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
زُهْدُكَ فِي الدُّنيا يُنْجيكَ، ورَغْبَتُكَ فيها تُرْديكَ۔
This can be translated as:
Your renunciation of this world will save you and your desire for it will cause you to fall into destruction.
Let us delve into the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (zuhd) "زُهْدُكَ" refers to renunciation or detachment from worldly desires and attachments. It signifies a mindset of contentment with what Allah has provided and a focus on the eternal life to come. The word (dunya) "دُّنيا" refers to the temporal world, the materialistic aspects of life that often distract us from our spiritual journey.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that support and shed light on this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 60:
And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?
This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of the worldly possessions and pleasures we may acquire. It reminds us that true fulfillment and everlasting rewards lie in seeking Allah's pleasure and the Hereafter. By renouncing the allure of this world, we free ourselves from its distractions and focus on what truly matters.
Another verse that resonates with this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20:
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse highlights the transient nature of worldly pursuits and the deceptive allure they hold. It compares the life of this world to a passing rain that brings temporary growth but eventually withers away. It serves as a reminder that our ultimate purpose lies beyond the fleeting pleasures of this world.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. He advises us that our salvation lies in renouncing the desires and attachments of this world. When we detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits and focus on the eternal, we safeguard our souls from the pitfalls and distractions that can lead to our destruction.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to prioritize our spiritual growth and connection with Allah over the temporary pleasures and possessions of this world. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the importance of seeking Allah's pleasure.
When we embrace the concept of zuhd, we develop a sense of contentment and gratitude for what Allah has bestowed upon us. We become less attached to material possessions and more focused on our spiritual journey. This detachment allows us to navigate the challenges and tests of this world with resilience and steadfastness, knowing that our true reward lies with Allah.
On the other hand, when we become consumed by our desires for worldly pleasures, we risk losing sight of our ultimate purpose. Our hearts become attached to the temporary, and we may engage in unethical or harmful actions to fulfill our desires. This attachment can lead to spiritual decline, moral corruption, and ultimately, our own destruction.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and detachment from the materialistic pursuits of this world. By renouncing the desires and attachments of this world, we safeguard our souls and pave the way for salvation. May Allah guide us to embrace the path of zuhd and grant us the strength to resist the temptations of this world.
