اَلْعَمَلُ رَفيقُ المُوقِنِ۔
Good action is the [close] companion of the believer.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العملُ رَفيقُ المُوقِنِ" which translates to
Good action is the [close] companion of the believer.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of righteous deeds in the life of a true believer.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us reflect upon the key words mentioned. The word (amal) "عَمَلُ" refers to any action or deed performed by an individual. It encompasses both physical acts and intentions. (rafiq) "رَفِيقُ" means a companion or a close friend who accompanies and supports someone throughout their journey. And (mu'min) "مُوقِنِ" refers to a believer, someone who has firm faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ).
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good deeds and their close association with true faith. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 277, Allah says,
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
This verse highlights the inseparable connection between faith and good actions. It is through righteous deeds that a believer demonstrates their sincerity and devotion to Allah.
Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 30, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.
This verse affirms that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will not disregard the efforts of those who combine faith with righteous actions. It serves as a reminder that good deeds are not only a means of earning rewards in the Hereafter but also a source of blessings and guidance in this worldly life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims. It reminds us that faith without action is incomplete and insufficient. Merely professing belief is not enough; it is the righteous deeds that accompany and strengthen our faith. Good actions are the manifestation of our faith and serve as a testimony to our devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
When a believer consistently engages in good deeds, it becomes a part of their character and identity. It shapes their behavior, choices, and interactions with others. For example, a believer who consistently performs acts of charity demonstrates their compassion and concern for the well-being of others. This not only benefits the recipients of their charity but also purifies their own soul and strengthens their bond with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, good actions have a ripple effect on society. When believers engage in acts of kindness, justice, and mercy, they inspire others to do the same. This creates a positive and virtuous cycle, spreading goodness and righteousness in the community. Conversely, if a believer neglects good deeds, their faith may weaken, and they may become susceptible to negative influences and temptations.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly strive for good actions and to ensure that their deeds align with their beliefs. It encourages us to be proactive in seeking opportunities to benefit others, to uphold justice, and to practice the teachings of Islam in our daily lives. By doing so, we not only strengthen our own faith but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that good actions are not separate from faith; rather, they are inseparable companions. It is through righteous deeds that our faith is truly demonstrated and strengthened. Let us strive to be believers who are known for their good actions, as this is a testament to the sincerity of our faith and our commitment to following the path of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to consistently engage in good deeds and make them a constant companion in our journey towards Him.
