— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Negligent)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ), and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the dire consequences of negligence and forgetfulness in preparing for our final journey, the journey of the Hereafter. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) uses the word (ghaflah) "غَفْلَةُ" to describe this state of negligence. Ghaflah refers to being heedless, unaware, or neglectful of one's duties and responsibilities towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the Hereafter.

The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the severity of this state by saying,

Woe be to the one who is overcome by negligence.

This phrase highlights the gravity of the consequences that await those who are trapped in a state of ghaflah. It serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to reflect upon their actions and ensure that they are not neglecting their spiritual journey.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly warns us about the dangers of ghaflah and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse reminds us that we must be conscious of our actions and their consequences. We should constantly evaluate our deeds and ensure that they align with the teachings of Islam. Negligence in this regard can lead to regret and sorrow on the Day of Judgment.

In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:99-100), Allah says,

Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.' No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.

These verses highlight the regret that will be felt by those who neglected their spiritual journey in this world. They will desperately wish for another chance to rectify their actions, but it will be too late. This serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to seize the opportunity they have in this life to prepare for the Hereafter.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to reflect on the transient nature of this world and the eternal nature of the Hereafter. It reminds us that our time in this world is limited, and we must make the most of it by preparing for our final journey. Negligence and forgetfulness in this regard can have severe consequences, as emphasized by the Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Therefore, it is incumbent upon every Muslim to constantly remind themselves of the Hereafter, engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and strive to improve their character. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling into a state of ghaflah and ensure that we are adequately prepared for our final journey.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to overcome negligence and remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. May He guide us to prepare for our final journey and grant us success in the Hereafter. Ameen.
