(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rectification And Making Amends)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

فازَ مَنْ أصْلَحَ عَمَلَ يَوْمِهِ، واسْتَدْرَكَ فَوارِطَ أمْسِهِ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

Successful is the one who reforms his current actions and makes amends for his past mistakes.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their significance. The word (aslaha) "أصْلَحَ" means to reform or rectify, indicating the need for self-improvement and the correction of one's actions. The word (amala) "عَمَلَ" refers to one's deeds or actions, encompassing both the physical and spiritual aspects of our conduct. The word (yawmih) "يَوْمِهِ" refers to one's current day, emphasizing the importance of seizing the opportunity to rectify our actions in the present moment. On the other hand, the word (fawarita) "فَوارِطَ" refers to the past, highlighting the need to make amends for any previous mistakes or shortcomings.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of reforming our actions and making amends for our past mistakes. It reminds us to refrain from ridiculing or insulting others, as it is a form of disobedience and wrongdoing. By rectifying our behavior and treating others with kindness and respect, we can strive towards success in the eyes of Allah.

Another verse that complements the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222), where Allah says,

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.

This verse emphasizes the importance of repentance and purification, indicating that Allah's love is bestowed upon those who constantly seek to reform their actions and make amends for their past mistakes.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that success lies in our ability to recognize and rectify our current actions, as well as make amends for our past mistakes. It encourages us to constantly strive for self-improvement and to seek forgiveness from Allah for any wrongdoings. By reforming our behavior and purifying our hearts, we can attain success in this world and the hereafter.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to reflect upon their actions, seek forgiveness for their past mistakes, and strive towards self-improvement. It teaches us the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and making a conscious effort to rectify our behavior. By following the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can attain success in this life and the hereafter. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in our endeavors.
