Hadith #2028

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of strategic positioning in battle. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his exceptional knowledge and wisdom, advises the Muslims to put the armoured man forward and the unarmoured one behind. This strategic arrangement ensures the protection of the weaker individuals and maximizes the effectiveness of the armed forces.

The phrase

Put the armoured man forward

refers to placing those who are well-equipped and well-prepared for battle at the front lines. These individuals possess the necessary armor and weapons to withstand the attacks of the enemy. By positioning them at the forefront, they serve as a shield for the rest of the army, protecting them from harm.

On the other hand, the phrase

the unarmoured one behind

suggests that those who are not fully equipped for battle should be placed towards the rear. These individuals may lack the necessary armor or weapons, making them more vulnerable to enemy attacks. Placing them behind the armoured soldiers ensures their safety and minimizes casualties.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises the Muslims to

grit your teeth because this will make the swords skip off the skulls.

This phrase emphasizes the importance of determination and resilience in the face of adversity. Gritting one's teeth signifies a firm resolve and readiness to face challenges head-on. By doing so, the swords of the enemy will be less likely to cause harm, as the Muslims' unwavering determination and unity will deter the enemy's advances.

This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of strategic planning and unity in times of conflict. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:71):

O you who have believed, take your precaution and [either] go forth in companies or go forth all together.

This verse highlights the significance of taking precautions and organizing oneself before engaging in battle. It encourages Muslims to go forth in groups or as a united force, emphasizing the strength and protection that comes from unity.

Additionally, the Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience, unity, and patience in times of adversity. By following the guidance of Allah and His Messenger, Muslims can maintain their strength and resilience, ensuring victory in both physical and spiritual battles.

The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the importance of strategic positioning, unity, and determination in times of conflict. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that success lies in proper planning, protecting the weaker members of the community, and maintaining unwavering resolve in the face of challenges. By adhering to these principles, Muslims can effectively defend themselves and uphold justice in the world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to implement these teachings in our lives.
