(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes four important aspects of a Muslim's life: fear of Allah, resisting the influence of Satan, focusing on the Hereafter, and striving for the pleasure of Allah. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to have (إتَّقِ اللّهَ) "fear of Allah" in our souls. This fear is not a fear of punishment, but rather a deep reverence and consciousness of Allah's presence in our lives. It is a fear that motivates us to avoid displeasing Him and to strive for His pleasure. The Quran supports this concept in numerous verses, such as in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), where Allah says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.

Secondly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to (وَنازِ عِ الشَّيْطانَ قِيادَكَ)

wrest away the control that Satan has over you

This implies that we should resist the temptations and whispers of Satan, who constantly tries to lead us astray. The Quran repeatedly warns us about the tricks of Satan and encourages us to seek refuge in Allah from his influence. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:200), Allah says,

And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.

Thirdly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to (وَاصْرِفْ إلَى الآخِرَةِ وَجْهَكَ)

turn our attention towards the Hereafter

This means that we should prioritize our eternal life over the temporary pleasures of this world. The Quran repeatedly reminds us of the transient nature of this worldly life and encourages us to focus on the everlasting life of the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah says,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to (واجْعَلْ لِلّهِ جِدَّكَ)

make the pleasure of Allah the object of our striving

This means that we should dedicate our efforts and actions solely for the sake of pleasing Allah, seeking His pleasure above all else. The Quran emphasizes the importance of striving for the pleasure of Allah in various verses, such as in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:207), where Allah says,

And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to cultivate fear of Allah, resist the influence of Satan, prioritize the Hereafter, and strive for the pleasure of Allah. These teachings are in line with the guidance of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of these aspects in the life of a believer. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
