اَلإيمانُ شَفيعٌ مُنجِحٌ۔
Faith is an effective intercessor.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Faith)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإيمانُ شَفيعٌ مُنجِحٌ۔" This translates to
Faith is an effective intercessor.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (Iman) "إيمان" refers to faith or belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His teachings. It encompasses the acceptance of the heart, the affirmation of the tongue, and the actions of the limbs in accordance with the guidance of Islam. It is a comprehensive concept that encompasses both belief and practice.
The word (shafi'un) "شَفيعٌ" means an intercessor or an advocate. It refers to someone who pleads on behalf of another, seeking their benefit or forgiveness. In the context of this Hadith, it signifies that faith has the power to intercede for a person, to advocate for them, and to bring about positive outcomes.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255),
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
This verse highlights that intercession is only possible with the permission of Allah. It emphasizes His absolute knowledge and authority over all matters. However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) complements this by stating that faith is an effective intercessor. It implies that through sincere faith, one can attain the permission of Allah for intercession.
Faith acts as a powerful advocate because it brings about a deep connection with Allah. It motivates individuals to strive for righteousness, to seek forgiveness, and to fulfill their obligations. This unwavering belief in Allah's mercy and His promise of reward enables faith to intercede on behalf of the believers.
Moreover, faith has transformative effects on individuals. It guides them towards virtuous actions and helps them avoid sinful behaviors. This is evident in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:14), where Allah says,
The bedouins say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts.
This verse highlights that true faith is not merely a verbal claim but a state of the heart. It implies that faith should manifest in one's actions and character. When faith becomes deeply rooted in the heart, it becomes a powerful force that can intercede for the believers.
The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It reminds us that faith is not just a passive belief, but an active force that can bring about positive change in our lives. It encourages us to strengthen our faith through knowledge, reflection, and righteous actions. By doing so, we can benefit from the intercession of faith, seeking Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and blessings.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize the importance of nurturing our faith and striving to increase it. We should seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can experience the transformative power of faith and its ability to intercede for us on the Day of Judgment.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that faith is an effective intercessor. It emphasizes the power of sincere belief in Allah and its ability to advocate for the believers. By strengthening our faith and aligning our actions with its principles, we can benefit from its intercession and seek Allah's mercy and forgiveness. May Allah increase our faith and grant us the ability to be true believers.
