He (‘a) consoled a man whose son passed away and [at the same time] was blessed with the birth of [another] son saying: May Allah make your reward great [for your patience] in that which He took away, and may His blessings be with you in that which He has bestowed [upon you].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Condolences and Congratulations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he consoles a man who has experienced the loss of a child while also being blessed with the birth of another child. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by acknowledging the greatness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His ability to bestow rewards and blessings upon His servants.
The word (‘azza) "عَزّى" in the Hadith means to console or offer condolences. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) shows his compassion and empathy towards the man by offering him words of comfort and solace during his time of grief. This demonstrates the deep understanding and emotional intelligence of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), as he recognizes the importance of providing support to those who are suffering.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then acknowledges the dual nature of the man's situation - the loss of a child and the birth of another. He prays to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to make the man's reward great for his patience in facing the loss, recognizing the immense difficulty and grief that comes with the death of a loved one. This highlights the importance of patience and perseverance in the face of trials and tribulations, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises great rewards for those who remain steadfast.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also prays for Allah's blessings upon the man for the birth of his new child. This demonstrates the recognition of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) that blessings come in various forms, and it is important to acknowledge and appreciate the goodness that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon us.
This Hadith is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of patience and gratitude in times of hardship and blessings. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155-157):
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
These verses remind us that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and it is through patience and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that we can find solace and blessings. The man in the Hadith is encouraged to have patience and trust in Allah's plan, knowing that his reward will be great for his endurance.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of gratitude and recognizing the blessings bestowed upon us. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) acknowledges the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) upon the man by praying for His blessings to be with him in the birth of his new child. This teaches us the importance of gratitude and recognizing the goodness that comes our way, as it opens the doors for further blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us valuable lessons about compassion, patience, and gratitude. It reminds us of the importance of consoling and supporting those who are grieving, as well as the significance of remaining patient and grateful in times of hardship and blessings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and seek His rewards and blessings in all aspects of our lives.
