(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hardships)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us on how to deal with tribulations and hardships that we may face in our lives. The Arabic words used in this Hadith are (al-mihan) "المِحَنُ" which means "tribulations" or "hardships," and (faq'ud) "فَاقْعُدْ" which means "sit" or "accept."

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155:

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are a part of life. They are a test from Allah to see how we respond and how patient we are. Instead of resisting or fighting against these hardships, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to "sit" or "accept" them. This means that we should not try to forcefully overcome or confront every difficulty that comes our way.

By sitting and accepting the tribulations, we show our trust in Allah's wisdom and plan for us. We acknowledge that everything happens for a reason and that there is a lesson or a greater good behind every hardship. This attitude of acceptance and surrender to Allah's will is beautifully exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions in the face of various challenges they encountered.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that our standing up and confronting these tribulations will only aggravate them. This means that reacting impulsively or aggressively to hardships can often make the situation worse or prolong our suffering. It is important to remember that patience and perseverance are key virtues in Islam.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 153:

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

By sitting and accepting the tribulations, we are able to maintain our composure and inner peace. We can reflect on the situation, seek guidance from Allah, and make wise decisions. This approach allows us to navigate through the challenges with a calm and clear mind, and it also prevents us from making impulsive or harmful choices that may worsen the situation.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of accepting and sitting with tribulations rather than resisting or confronting them. It reminds us to have trust in Allah's plan and to approach hardships with patience and perseverance. By doing so, we can maintain our inner peace, seek guidance from Allah, and make wise decisions that will ultimately lead to our growth and spiritual development. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to face and overcome the trials of life with patience and faith.
