Verily patience is a virtue except if it is [when others are patient] concerning you, and apprehension is bad except if it is over you; verily the affliction [we suffer] by your loss is great whereas [the hardships] before you and after you are insignificant [in comparison].

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of patience and the consequences of our actions. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith.

Firstly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that patience is a beautiful virtue, except when it is directed towards someone who wrongs us. This implies that while patience is generally commendable, it is not praiseworthy to be patient with those who oppress or harm us. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourages believers to stand up against injustice and oppression. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8),

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that apprehension is a negative trait, except when it is directed towards oneself. This implies that being cautious and aware of our own actions and their consequences is crucial. It is important to reflect on our own behavior and strive for self-improvement. The Quran emphasizes self-accountability in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18),

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

The Imam then highlights the magnitude of the affliction caused by the loss of the Prophet Muhammad (). This loss is described as great, indicating the immense impact it had on the Muslim community. The loss of the Prophet () was not only a personal tragedy for the believers but also a significant turning point in the history of Islam. The Quran acknowledges the grief and sorrow experienced by the believers in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:101),

And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become accustomed to hypocrisy. You, [O Muhammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice [in this world]; then they will be returned to a great punishment.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that the hardships before and after the Prophet () are insignificant in comparison to the affliction caused by his loss. This highlights the unique and unparalleled status of the Prophet () in the hearts of the believers. The challenges faced by the early Muslims before the Prophet's () arrival and the difficulties encountered after his departure cannot be equated to the immense grief and void left by his demise. The Quran emphasizes the importance of the Prophet () in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:56),

Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold justice, be mindful of their actions, and recognize the profound impact of the loss of the Prophet Muhammad (). It teaches us the importance of standing against oppression, being self-reflective, and cherishing the legacy of the Prophet () in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement these teachings in our daily lives.
