مَنْ بَصَّرَكَ عَيْبَكَ فَقَدْ نَصَحَكَ۔
One who shows you your fault has indeed counselled you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Flaws And Faults)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ بَصَّرَكَ عَيْبَكَ فَقَدْ نَصَحَكَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who shows you your fault has indeed counselled you.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the teachings of the Quran.
The word (bassarak) "بَصَّرَكَ" in this Hadith means "to see" or "to perceive." It refers to someone who has the ability to recognize and point out the faults or shortcomings of another person. The word (aybak) "عَيْبَكَ" means "your fault" or "your imperfection." It signifies any deficiency or weakness that may exist within an individual. And finally, the word (nasahaka) "نَصَحَكَ" means "to counsel" or "to advise." It implies sincere guidance and advice given with the intention of helping someone improve themselves.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment or taking action. It encourages Muslims to be cautious and not harm others based on incomplete or false knowledge.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse highlights the importance of not making assumptions or judgments without proper knowledge. It reminds Muslims to be mindful of their words and actions, especially when it comes to pointing out the faults of others.
Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. When someone points out our faults, it can be a humbling experience. It reminds us that we are not perfect and that there is room for improvement. Rather than becoming defensive or resentful, we should embrace this feedback as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. By accepting and acknowledging our faults, we can work towards rectifying them and becoming better individuals.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of sincere advice and counsel within the Muslim community. When someone takes the time to point out our faults, it is a sign of their care and concern for our well-being. It is an act of love and compassion, aimed at helping us become better versions of ourselves. This Hadith encourages Muslims to be open to constructive criticism and to view it as a form of guidance and support.
Furthermore, this Hadith teaches us the value of self-reflection and self-awareness. It reminds us to constantly examine ourselves and identify our own faults and shortcomings. By doing so, we can take proactive steps to rectify them and strive for self-improvement. This self-awareness also helps us to be more empathetic towards others and to approach their faults with kindness and understanding.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
One who shows you your fault has indeed counselled you
carries profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims. It reminds us to be open to constructive criticism, to embrace self-reflection, and to view the recognition of our faults as an opportunity for growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to accept advice with humility and the strength to continuously improve ourselves.
