حُبُّ المالِ يُقَوِّيَ الآمالَ، ويُفْسِدُ الأعْمالَ۔
Love of wealth strengthens [false] hopes and corrupts actions.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Love of wealth strengthens [false] hopes and corrupts actions.
This thought-provoking saying highlights the detrimental effects of excessive attachment to material possessions. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (love) "حُبُّ" signifies a strong affection or attachment towards something. (wealth) "المالِ" refers to material possessions, including money, property, and other worldly assets. (strengthens) "يُقَوِّيَ" implies that the love of wealth has the power to reinforce or intensify certain aspects. Lastly, (corrupts) "يُفْسِدُ" denotes the negative impact and harm caused by this excessive attachment.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the dangers of excessive love for wealth. In Surah Al-Imran (3:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the allure of worldly possessions, stating,
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.
This verse emphasizes that the love of wealth and worldly possessions can distract individuals from the ultimate purpose of life, which is to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It highlights the temporary nature of worldly enjoyments and reminds us that true fulfillment lies in the hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) narrates the story of the rich and the poor, stating,
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse emphasizes that while wealth and children may be seen as a form of adornment in this worldly life, they hold no real value in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Instead, what truly matters are the enduring good deeds that one performs, as they hold greater reward and hope for the believers.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the detrimental effects of excessive attachment to wealth. When one becomes overly consumed by the love of material possessions, their hopes and aspirations become centered around accumulating more wealth, often at the expense of their spiritual growth and moral conduct.
This excessive love for wealth can lead to various negative consequences. It can breed greed, selfishness, and a disregard for the rights of others. It can also lead to unethical behavior, such as dishonesty, exploitation, and corruption. Moreover, it can divert one's focus from the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the pursuit of righteous actions.
As Muslims, we are encouraged to strike a balance between our worldly pursuits and our spiritual obligations. While it is not inherently wrong to possess wealth, it is crucial to maintain a mindset of detachment and gratitude. We should use our wealth as a means to fulfill our responsibilities towards our families, communities, and the less fortunate, while always remembering that true success lies in the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the love of wealth. Excessive attachment to material possessions can lead to false hopes, corrupt actions, and a neglect of our spiritual obligations. By seeking a balance between our worldly pursuits and our spiritual growth, we can strive to lead a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial to ourselves and society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness.
