— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lying)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما أقْبَحَ الكِذْبَ بِذَوِى الفَضْلِ

which translates to

How repulsive is dishonesty by the people of virtue!

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the ugliness and repugnance of lying, especially when it is committed by individuals who are known for their excellence and righteousness.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (ugly/repulsive) "أقْبَحَ" emphasizes the extreme displeasure and aversion towards dishonesty. It conveys the idea that lying is not only morally wrong but also aesthetically displeasing. (dishonesty/lying) "الكِذْبَ" refers to intentionally distorting or concealing the truth, deceiving others for personal gain or to avoid consequences.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement resonates with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly condemns lying and emphasizes the importance of truthfulness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42),

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

This verse highlights the obligation to speak the truth openly and honestly, without any distortion or concealment.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:81), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the consequences of lying, stating,

And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'

This verse emphasizes that falsehood is transient and will eventually be exposed, while truth stands firm and prevails.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of honesty, integrity, and truthfulness, especially for those who are considered virtuous and hold positions of authority or influence. When individuals who are respected and admired for their virtues engage in dishonesty, it not only tarnishes their own reputation but also undermines the trust and credibility of the entire community.

The consequences of dishonesty by people of virtue can be far-reaching. It erodes the moral fabric of society, weakens interpersonal relationships, and leads to a breakdown of trust. Muslims are called upon to be people of integrity, upholding the values of honesty and truthfulness in all aspects of their lives.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-accountability. It serves as a reminder that individuals who possess knowledge, wisdom, and virtuous qualities have a greater responsibility to uphold truth and honesty. They should be exemplars of righteousness, guiding others towards the path of integrity and righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

How repulsive is dishonesty by the people of virtue!

emphasizes the repugnance of lying, particularly when committed by individuals known for their excellence and righteousness.
