(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ تَوَكَّلَ كُفِيَ۔" This can be translated as,

Whoever puts his trust [in Allah] is catered for.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of placing our complete reliance and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The word (tawakkala) "تَوَكَّلَ" comes from the root word (wakala) "وَكَلَ", which means to rely, trust, or depend on someone. It signifies surrendering our affairs to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and entrusting Him with our well-being. This act of tawakkul is not passive; rather, it is an active choice to place our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) while taking the necessary means and actions.

The phrase (kufiya) "كُفِيَ۔" can be translated as "is catered for" or "is sufficient." It highlights the promise of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to provide for those who rely on Him. This promise is a testament to the mercy and care of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) towards His creation.

The concept of tawakkul is deeply rooted in the Quran, and numerous verses emphasize its significance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us that He is the ultimate provider and sustainer, and placing our trust in Him brings about countless blessings and rewards.

One of the verses that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah At-Talaq (65:3), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.

This verse beautifully echoes the words of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and affirms the divine promise of Allah's sufficiency for those who place their trust in Him.

Another verse that complements this Hadith is found in Surah Ash-Shura (42:36), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

So rely upon Allah; indeed, you are upon the clear truth.

This verse encourages Muslims to rely solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and affirms that true guidance and success lie in trusting Him completely.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to place their unwavering trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of their lives. When faced with challenges, uncertainties, or difficulties, we should turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and rely on Him for guidance, support, and provision.

By trusting in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we acknowledge His infinite knowledge, wisdom, and power. This trust strengthens our faith and deepens our connection with our Creator. It also brings about a sense of peace and tranquility, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is in control of all affairs and will provide for us in ways beyond our comprehension.

Moreover, placing our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) motivates us to take action and make efforts in line with His guidance. It does not mean that we sit idle and wait for miracles to happen. Rather, it encourages us to work hard, make wise decisions, and seek the means to achieve our goals, all while recognizing that ultimate success lies in the hands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The consequences of practicing tawakkul are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and increases our reliance on Him. This reliance helps us overcome challenges and hardships, as we firmly believe that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the best of planners and will guide us towards what is best for us.

Secondly, tawakkul instills in us a sense of contentment and gratitude. When we trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) plan, we accept whatever comes our way with patience and gratitude, knowing that it is part of His divine wisdom. This mindset allows us to find peace and happiness in every situation, regardless of whether it aligns with our desires or not.

Lastly, practicing tawakkul empowers us to let go of unnecessary worries and anxieties. We understand that we are not in control of the outcomes, but Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is. This realization frees us from the burden of excessive stress and anxiety, allowing us to live a more peaceful and fulfilling life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to place their complete trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By relying on Him, we acknowledge His sovereignty, wisdom, and ability to provide for our needs. This trust is supported by numerous Quranic verses that highlight the significance of tawakkul in our lives. Practicing tawakkul motivates us to take action while recognizing that ultimate success lies in the hands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), instills contentment and gratitude, and empowers us to let go of unnecessary worries. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to place our trust in Him and experience the blessings and peace that come with it.
