One who fights his [lower] self perfects his piety.
مَنْ جاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ أَكْمَلَ التُّقى۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who knows his self struggles against it.
مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ جاهَدَها۔

One who does not struggle against his self will not achieve victory.
مَنْ لَمْ يُجاهِدْ نَفْسَهُ لَمْ يَنَلِ الفَوْزَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
There is no struggle more worthy than struggling against the self.
ما مِنْ جِهاد أفْضَلُ مِنْ جِهادِ النَّفْسِ۔

Struggling against the self is a trait of the noble ones.
مُجاهَدَةُ النَّفْسِ شيمَةُ النُّبَلاءِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Struggling against the self is a symbol of nobility.
مُجاهَدَةُ النَّفْسِ عُنْوانُ النُّبْلِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Struggling against the self is the best Jihād.
مُجاهَدَةُ النَّفْسِ أفْضَلُ جِهاد۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
There is no Jihād like struggle against the self.
لا جِهادَ كَجِهادِ النَّفْسِ۔
